2017 year-end writing round-up
Total year-long word count:
62,484 words, which floors me bc i didn’t expect that at all? definitely my most prolific fic writing yr so far. and it’s HILARIOUS bc it’s mostly all in the latter half of the yr, entirely jumpstarted by me going to watch power rangers in theatres with no idea what was coming, and also by yuletide, my first ever fic exchange, responsible for 25k of this total.
and this is just FINISHED fic word count... i have more in wips so it’s kinda boggling my mind rn. who’d have thought... i write!

pretty much all my other wips are from past years lol but shoutout to my hyyh post-apocalyptic magnum opus, currently rotting at 18k and not even halfway finished, and my tmfu ot3 amnesia au i started the day after i saw it in theatres in, yes, 2015, and though no one else probably still cares about this movie but me i swear i will finish this out of pure spite @ my own self.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
more! looking thru the yrs on ao3, my annual totals usually range between 10-30k (bc i like writing longfic and most of these are really just 1 or 2 works per year lol). in terms of change this year i’d say i wrote a larger amount of shorter things, and for a variety of different fandoms as opposed to the same 3 animanga fandoms every time lmao
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
like... all of them except the bts ones lmao. i feel the reason why i branched out into so many dif fandoms + started writing shorter things was bc i started getting into the habit of just writing to get my feelings out? as opposed to meticulously planning a story or w/e i really just wanted to get back into... saying things. as freely as possible. so i’d watch or read something and be like, hey i have feelings, let’s get this out.
shoutout especially to power rangers, six of crows, and stranger things, all of which i NEVER thought i would write fic for. i also would never have anticipated signing up for a fic exchange but i’m really glad i did.

personal faves are am i the only living soul around, which i workshopped furiously in class and gave me life to sustain me through the summer; elegy, which is an incredibly me thing to have written (pick a voice and run with it after all the shit that’s happened and give them some peace); it’s just the way you are when you’re overgrown which is not so much a favourite of mine but rather—it’s so fucking... personal and transparent i can’t even reread it; and all the nameless that keeps us rising despite, which i tried to talk myself out of writing for the longest time bc i was sure i wouldn’t be able to do the characters justice, and i still don’t think i have, but what i came up with is still so very dear to my heart.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
umm not really. i wrote am i the only living soul around in reverse order for no real reason other than that’s what it instantly was when i conceptualized it in my mind for the first time LMAO. wouldn’t say it was challenging per se, just different, and fun. signing up for yuletide was also an exciting challenge, and one that i’d like to think i rose up to.
Your most popular story of this year:
i feel like the future is all mine was very popular, which was surprising to me personally but also very validating bc yes, i have had this indulgent ass idea since i was 16 watching pmmm for the first time and it WORKS, yes!!
Most fun story to write:
listen. your sleeping sixth sense will open its eyes literally came into life riding on the wings of my aforementioned hyyh wip and it felt SO GOOD getting these themes, ideas, words out. also i have wanted to write something for triple h since i saw the mv for the first time and i mean, c’mon. post apocalyptic roadtrip with a fucked up ot3 is so on brand for me. the future is all mine was also really gleefully fun because again, i finally got to write an idea i’d had for years!!
Story of yours most under-appreciated by the universe, in your opinion:
have a heart only bc it’s the second fucking fic in the entire edge of seventeen tag. like, guys... c’mon... watch this movie! please!
Story with the single sexiest moment:
lol i don’t really... do that bc repression and all that but it was fun writing that kind of repressed physicality/sexual tension in your sleeping sixth sense will open its eyes (bathtub scene was a riot to write, with me just clutching at my own face and trying to act out body angles in front of my laptop) and also at the end of adrift in past and future tense.
Story that shifted your own perceptions of the characters:
oh man, adrift in past and future tense's jesper was harder than i thought he would be, i rewrote that scene so many times. the trick, i think, was writing him through kaz’s eyes; i tend to soften characters, and it took me a while to settle on something i could stand by. idk, most of the characters i wrote this year weren’t ones i was especially familiar with, since i wrote so many new fandoms. actually, writing am i the only soul around (and my current power rangers wip lmao) really solidified my conception of billy, and also helped me better understand trini (who i STILL find the hardest to write of them all, i just SUCK at her voice and untangling her motivations, okay!!)
Hardest story to write:
adrift in past and future tense lmao i was so stressed abt getting the character voices right, even if the story structure came to me right away. otherwise it’s just the way you are when you’re overgrown took me one (1) whole year and you can probably tell the amount of overediting i did, god the amount of times i have rewritten that first scene... what the fuck was i doing... and i actually cut/reworked so much of it over time, more than i have for any other fic in my life probably. the other side of the coin was a bit of a challenge in that although i like the idea of steve/nancy/jonathan, i didn’t really get too much foundation for it from canon (i was REALLY relying on the whole “THERE ARE SOME THINGS IN LIFE YOU CAN’T SHARE WITHOUT ENDING UP LIKING EACH OTHER, AND FIGHTING A DEMOGORGON IS ONE OF THEM” thing), and i had to dig p hard to make it convincing to myself lol.
Biggest disappointment:
not finishing my power rangers wip lmao COME ON!!!!! YOU HAD ONE JOB
Biggest surprise:
again, the fact that i dug the future is all mine out from the dusty recesses of my brain and polished it up in this year of 2017, and it was well-received!! also, yuletide!! also, all these new fandoms i wrote for!! also, 60k!! wow!!
Most unintentionally telling story:

honestly i think i’ve done very well for myself in terms of fic writing this year and next year i think i should... get back to original fiction lol. otherwise, i would really like 2018 to be a year of finishing wips (i believe it!!) and writing whatever the hell i want whenever i think of it. JUST GET IT OUT!! but i’m proud of what i’ve put out this yr and i’m looking forward to a year of writing, writing, writing. to all those who have read anything at all i've written this year, who have left me lovely comments, or even if you’ve read this far on this incredibly self-indulgent post, thank you. <3
